  • The wet Pendulum test is used to test the floor when wet, where water is sprayed on a floor and the pendulum shoved across the floor. The boot will move the pendulum and give a reading on the friction of the floor.
  • The two methods above are done on the site, but there are also lab tests which are used to test flooring materials before they are installed. These are not very common to the public, since they are carried out mainly in the production phase of the design and manufacture of the flooring material. Nevertheless, the lab tests are also very important.

More about slip testing

Whenever people hear about slip testing, they immediately think of the wet pendulum test. This is because it is one of the easiest and most accurate testing methods. However, there are many other ways in which slip testing is done and we are going to look at some of them for today.

Dry FFT Slip Resistance test

This machine is designed in a way that it will measure the slip resistance of a floor in dry conditions. Remember that the pendulum test is done when the floor is wet. This machine is called the Tortus and is got that name because it moves slowly over the floor just like a tortoise. The machine has a rubber slider below it and this measures the level of friction as the machine moves across the surface of the floor.

Wet Barefoot incline platform test.

This is a test that is done under controlled conditions. The nature of the test is not to test how the floor reacts to bare feet when wet, but how the wet bare feet react to the floor. Consider the floor of a spa or a swimming pool. Your feet have been in the water and the skin is fully damp. How will this affect the slipperiness of the floor? This is what the test is about. The tester puts feet in water for a while, and then walks on dry material that is in an incline.

Oil Wet Ramp resistance testing

This is a slip testing method that is used to determine slanted ramps that may be wet. This is important for flooring that is used for industrial settings and also kitchens. The tester is hooked up to a harness and then made to walk across the material as it is being inclined, just like a ramp would. This will give the R-rating of the material, which means that ramps should not be inclined beyond a certain angle when that particular material is used.

Wet Pendulum slip testing

The wet pendulum slip test method involves spraying water on a floor, and then pushing the pendulum across. The boot will measure how much friction there is and the results are interpreted on-site. The Top Tips to Preventing Slips and Falls

If after slip resistance testing you find that your floor is safe, you can further enhance this safety by including some of the tips listed here in your business.

  • Use appropriate shoes – ask all your employees to wear shoes that have high friction soles, preferably rubber. If they are working in an environment that may have water or slippery liquids, rubber-soled shoes can help them prevent slips.
  • Grind or etch concrete that is smooth – although concrete is not normally slippery, a floor with very smooth concrete should be ground, or chemically etched.
